Latino Cultural Center

A 33,000 square foot community cultural center and performing arts theater designed by AIA Gold Medal-winning architect Ricardo Legoretta. The building skin is made entirely of aerated autoclave concrete panels (or AAC panels), chosen because of their thermal and acoustic properties, hung from a steel frame structure. Sider-Oxydro plaster was used on the remainder of the building, allowing the exterior of the building to appear to be large unbroken planes of color. Other architectural details include pipe fencing with no top support, hidden panel-covered bi-fold doors, curved, recessed cold-cathod lighting coves, frameless windows throughout the facility, and concrete floors. The center features a 10’ x 21’ diameter ceiling mural with a natural light tunnel from the building’s exterior, and a compass design on the floor using integral colored concrete, three stained concrete colors and Texture-Top. The compass design continues outside the building on the large plaza, using five different colors of concrete pavers. In addition to museum and classroom areas, the center also includes a full-feature 500-seat performing arts theater, complete with state-of-the-art lighting, audio, and acoustical systems. The acoustical system included fabric wrapped panels at the back wall and suspended acoustical panels at the ceiling. The theater included a control booth as well as full stage rigging.
